Pop singer Michael Jackson suffers second degree burns to his scalp during the filming of a Pepsi commercial in the Shrine Auditorium. (27. January 1984)

Brunei becomes the sixth member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). (7. January 1984)

Advance Australia Fair is proclaimed as Australia's national anthem, and green and gold as the national colours. (19. April 1984)

Holy See–United States relations: The United States and Holy See (Vatican City) re-establish full diplomatic relations after almost 117 years, overturning Congress's 1867 ban on public funding for such a diplomatic envoy. (10. January 1984)

Vanessa Williams becomes the first Miss America to resign when she surrenders her crown after nude photos of her appeared in Penthouse magazine. (23. July 1984)

The Good Friday Massacre, an extremely violent ice hockey playoff game, is played in Montreal, Canada. (20. April 1984)

Police Constable Yvonne Fletcher is killed by gunfire from the Libyan People's Bureau (Embassy) in London during a small demonstration outside the embassy. Ten others are wounded. The events lead to an 11-day siege of the building. (17. April 1984)

Teachers at the McMartin preschool in Manhattan Beach, California are charged with satanic ritual abuse of the children in the school. The charges are later dropped as completely unfounded. (22. March 1984)

The original American Telephone & Telegraph Company is divested of its 22 Bell System companies as a result of the settlement of the 1974 United States Department of Justice antitrust suit against AT&T. (1. January 1984)

A major clash between about 5,000 police and a similar number of miners takes place at Orgreave, South Yorkshire, during the 1984-1985 UK miners' strike. (18. June 1984)

John Buster and the research team at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center announce history's first embryo transfer, from one woman to another resulting in a live birth. (3. February 1984)

Tropical Storm Domoina makes landfall in southern Mozambique, eventually causing 214 deaths and some of the most severe flooding so far recorded in the region. (28. January 1984)

McDonald's massacre in San Ysidro, California: in a fast-food restaurant, James Oliver Huberty opens fire, killing 21 people and injuring 19 others before being shot dead by police. (18. July 1984)

The Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, orders an attack on the Golden Temple, the holiest site of the Sikh religion. (5. June 1984)

Members of Cameroon's Republican Guard unsuccessfully attempt to overthrow the government headed by Paul Biya. (6. April 1984)
