The first horse-drawn bus makes its début in the city of Mumbai, traveling two routes. (9. May 1874)

A flood on the Mill River in Massachusetts destroys much of four villages and kills 139 people. (16. May 1874)

Japan launches its postal savings system, modeled after a similar system in the United Kingdom. (5. August 1874)

Hawaii signed a treaty with the United States granting exclusive trade rights. (18. March 1874)

One of the longest cases ever heard in an English court ends when the defendant is convicted of perjury for attempting to assume the identity of the heir to the Tichborne baronetcy. (28. February 1874)

Greek politician Charilaos Trikoupis publishes a manifesto in the Athens daily Kairoi entitled "Who's to Blame?" in which he lays out his complaints against King George. He is elected Prime Minister of Greece the next year. (29. June 1874)

The first group of Dorsland trekkers under the leadership of Gert Alberts leaves Pretoria. (27. May 1874)

The first Arbor Day is celebrated in Nebraska. (10. April 1874)
