Mexican Revolution: Pancho Villa takes Zacatecas from Victoriano Huerta. (23. June 1914)

The Ford Motor Company announces an eight-hour workday and that it would pay a "living wage" of at least $5 for a day's labor. (5. January 1914)

World War I: Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia after Serbia rejects the conditions of an ultimatum sent by Austria on July 23 following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. (28. July 1914)

The Protocol of Corfu is signed recognising full autonomy to Northern Epirus under nominal Albanian sovereignty. (17. May 1914)

Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria and his wife Sophie are assassinated in Sarajevo by Bosnia Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip, the casus belli of World War I. (28. June 1914)

The Autonomous Republic of Northern Epirus is proclaimed in Gjirokastër, by the Greeks living in southern Albania. (28. February 1914)

Austria-Hungary issues a series of demands in an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia demanding Serbia to allow the Austrians to determine who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Serbia will accept all but one of those demands and Austria will declare war on July 28. (23. July 1914)

World War I: the Royal Navy defeats the German fleet in the Battle of Heligoland Bight. (28. August 1914)

The Republic of China joins the Universal Postal Union. (1. March 1914)

World War I: the German colony of Togoland is invaded by French and British forces, who take it after 5 days. (26. August 1914)

World War I: The German minelayer Königin Luise lays a minefield about 40 miles (64 km) off the Thames Estuary (Lowestoft). She is intercepted and sunk by the British light-cruiser HMS Amphion. (5. August 1914)

World War I: Germany invades Belgium. In response, Belgium and the United Kingdom declare war on Germany. The United States declares its neutrality. (4. August 1914)

World War I: Battle of Stallupönen – The German army of General Hermann von François defeats the Russian force commanded by Paul von Rennenkampf near modern-day Nesterov, Russia. (17. August 1914)

World War I: German troops conquer Namur. (28. August 1914)

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., the first historically black intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity to be officially recognized at Howard University, is founded. (9. January 1914)

World War I: A male servant of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright sets fire to the living quarters of the latter's Wisconsin home, Taliesin, murders seven people and burns the living quarters to the ground. (15. August 1914)

In Brazil, Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras is founded. (26. August 1914)

Copyright: In New York City the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers is established to protect the copyrighted musical compositions of its members. (13. February 1914)
