Syria completes withdrawal from Lebanon, ending 29 years of occupation. (29. April 2005)

In Belmopan, Belize, the unrest over the government's new taxes erupts into riots. (21. January 2005)

Texas City Refinery explosion: During a test on a distillation tower liquid waste builds up and flows out of a blowout tower. Waste fumes ignite and explode killing 15 workers. (23. March 2005)

The Airbus A380, the world's largest commercial jet, is unveiled at a ceremony in Toulouse, France (18. January 2005)

Four terrorist bombings, occurring exactly two weeks after the similar July 7 bombings, target London's public transportation system. All four bombs fail to detonate and all four suspected suicide bombers are captured and later convicted and imprisoned for long terms. (21. July 2005)

Bulgaria and Romania sign accession treaties to join the European Union. (25. April 2005)

A series of strong storms lashes Southern Ontario spawning several tornadoes as well as creating extreme flash flooding within the city of Toronto and its surrounding communities. In Toronto, it is also dubbed the "Toronto Supercell". (19. August 2005)

Mumbai, India receives 99.5cm of rain (39.17 inches) within 24 hours, bringing the city to a halt for over 2 days. (26. July 2005)

Eris, the largest known dwarf planet in the Solar System, is discovered by the team of Michael E. Brown, Chad Trujillo, and David L. Rabinowitz using images originally taken on October 21, 2003, at the Palomar Observatory. (5. January 2005)

A stampede on Al-Aaimmah bridge in Baghdad kills 1,199 people. (31. August 2005)

A train collision in Graniteville, South Carolina, releases about 60 tons of chlorine gas. (6. January 2005)

Space Shuttle program: STS-114 Mission – Launch of Discovery, NASA's first scheduled flight mission after the Columbia Disaster in 2003. (26. July 2005)

Astronomers announce their discovery of the dwarf planet Eris. (29. July 2005)

Deep Impact launches from Cape Canaveral on a Delta II rocket. (12. January 2005)
