Movement of 15 Khordad: Protests against the arrest of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini by the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. In several cities, masses of angry demonstrators are confronted by tanks and paratroopers. (5. June 1963)

The Buddhist crisis: Soldiers of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam attack protesting Buddhists in Huế, South Vietnam, with liquid chemicals from tear-gas grenades, causing 67 people to be hospitalised for blistering of the skin and respiratory ailments. (3. June 1963)

Marriage of HRH Princess Alexandra of Kent to the Hon Angus Ogilvy at Westminster Abbey in London. (24. April 1963)

The Evergreen Point Bridge, the longest floating bridge in the world, opens between Seattle and Medina, Washington, US. (28. August 1963)

The first inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame are announced. (29. January 1963)

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development votes to admit Japan. (26. July 1963)

Alcatraz, a federal penitentiary on an island in San Francisco Bay, closes. (21. March 1963)

American Civil Rights Movement: Alabama Governor George Wallace stands at the door of Foster Auditorium at the University of Alabama in an attempt to block two black students, Vivian Malone and James Hood, from attending that school. Later in the day, accompanied by federalized National Guard troops, they are able to register. (11. June 1963)

The iconic Bluenose II was launched in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The schooner is a major Canadian symbol. (24. July 1963)

Project Mercury: The launch of the final Mercury mission, Mercury-Atlas 9 with astronaut L. Gordon Cooper on board. He becomes the first American to spend more than a day in space. (15. May 1963)

The 16th Street Baptist Church bombing: Four children killed at an African-American church in Birmingham, Alabama, United States (15. September 1963)

March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom: the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. gives his I Have a Dream speech (28. August 1963)

Swissair Flight 306 crashes near Dürrenäsch, Switzerland, killing all 80 people on board. (4. September 1963)

Execution of Henry John Burnett, the last man to be hanged in Scotland, UK. (15. August 1963)

The Guinea-Bissau War of Independence officially begins when PAIGC guerrilla fighters attack the Portuguese army stationed in Tite. (23. January 1963)

A day after South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem announced the Joint Communique to end the Buddhist crisis, a riot involving around 2,000 people breaks out. One person is killed. (17. June 1963)

Vietnam War: The Viet Cong wins its first major victory in the Battle of Ap Bac. (2. January 1963)
