Lewinsky scandal: On American television, U.S. President Bill Clinton denies having had "sexual relations" with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. (26. January 1998)

The Food and Drug Administration approves Viagra for use as a treatment for male impotence, the first pill to be approved for this condition in the United States. (27. March 1998)

Kerry Wood strikes out 20 Houston Astros to tie the major league record held by Roger Clemens. He threw a one-hitter and did not walk a batter in his 5th career start. (6. May 1998)

Karla Faye Tucker is executed in Texas, becoming the first woman executed in the United States since 1984. (3. February 1998)

A tornado sweeps through Dantan in India killing 250 people and injuring 3000 others. (24. March 1998)

An oil tanker train collides with a freight train in Yaoundé, Cameroon, spilling fuel oil. One person scavenging the oil created a massive explosion which kills 120. (14. February 1998)

Roman Catholic sex abuse cases: The Diocese of Dallas agrees to pay $23.4 million to nine former altar boys who claimed they were sexually abused by Rudolph Kos, a former priest. (10. July 1998)

Lewinsky scandal: US President Bill Clinton admits in taped testimony that he had an "improper physical relationship" with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. On the same day he admits before the nation that he "misled people" about the relationship. (17. August 1998)

Compaq Computer pays $9 billion for Digital Equipment Corporation in the largest high-tech acquisition. (11. June 1998)

Travelers Group announces an agreement to undertake the $76 billion merger between Travelers and Citicorp, and the merger is completed on October 8, of that year, forming Citibank. (6. April 1998)
