Ajinomoto is founded. Kikunae Ikeda of the Tokyo Imperial University discovers that a key ingredient in kombu soup stock is monosodium glutamate (MSG), and patents a process for manufacturing it. (25. July 1908)

The Tunguska event occurs in remote Siberia. (30. June 1908)

The Second Constitution accepted by the Ottomans. (23. July 1908)

Austria-Hungary annexes Bosnia-Herzegovina, sparking a crisis. (6. October 1908)

Wilbur Wright makes his first flight at a racecourse at Le Mans, France. It is the Wright Brothers' first public flight. (8. August 1908)

SOS is adopted as the international distress signal. (1. July 1908)

The Wright Flyer flown by Orville Wright, with Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge as passenger, crashes killing Selfridge. He becomes the first airplane fatality. (17. September 1908)

United States Attorney General Charles Joseph Bonaparte issues an order to immediately staff the Office of the Chief Examiner (later renamed the Federal Bureau of Investigation). (26. July 1908)

H. H. Asquith of the Liberal Party takes office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, succeeding Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman (7. April 1908)
