World War I: The Second Battle of the Somme begins. (21. August 1918)

World War I: German fighter ace Manfred von Richthofen, better known as "The Red Baron", is shot down and killed over Vaux-sur-Somme in France. (21. April 1918)

The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and the First Republic of Armenia declare their independence. (28. May 1918)

Manfred von Richthofen, aka The Red Baron, shoots down his 79th and 80th victims, his final victories before his death the following day. (20. April 1918)

The Austro-Hungarian battleship SMS Szent István sinks off the Croatian coast after being torpedoed by an Italian MAS motorboat; the event is recorded by camera from a nearby vessel. (10. June 1918)

Moscow becomes the capital of Russia again after Saint Petersburg held this status for 215 years. (12. March 1918)

Czechoslovakia becomes a republic. (14. November 1918)

The Kingdom of Iceland becomes a sovereign state, yet remains a part of the Danish kingdom. (1. December 1918)

Stephen W. Thompson shoots down a German airplane. It is the first aerial victory by the U.S. military. (5. February 1918)

The Imperial Japanese Navy battleship Kawachi blows up at Shunan, western Honshu, Japan, killing at least 621. (12. July 1918)

World War I: The Meuse-Argonne Offensive, the bloodiest single battle in American history, begins. (26. September 1918)

King Boris III of Bulgaria accedes to the throne. (3. October 1918)

World War I: Austria-Hungary surrenders to Italy. (4. November 1918)

The Royal Air Force is created by the merger of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. (1. April 1918)

Emperor Charles I of Austria relinquishes power. (11. November 1918)

The German High Seas Fleet is incapacitated when sailors mutiny on the night of the 29th-30th, an action which would trigger the German Revolution of 1918–19. (29. October 1918)

The Hammond Circus Train Wreck kills 86 and injures 127 near Hammond, Indiana. (22. June 1918)

Mehmed Talat Pasha and the Young Turk (C.U.P.) ministry resign and sign an armistice, ending Ottoman participation in World War I. (13. October 1918)

The RMS Carpathia, the ship that rescued the 705 survivors from the RMS Titanic, is sunk off Ireland by the German SM U-55; 5 lives are lost. (17. July 1918)
