The Hanafi Siege: In a thirty-nine-hour standoff, armed Hanafi Muslims seize three Washington, D.C., buildings, killing two and taking 149 hostage. (9. March 1977)

28 people are killed in the Guatemala City air disaster. (27. April 1977)

Chinese government removes a decade old ban on William Shakespeare's work, effectively ending the Cultural Revolution started in 1966. (25. May 1977)

George Willig climbs the South Tower of New York City's World Trade Center. (26. May 1977)

Star Wars (retitled Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in 1981) is released in theaters, inspiring the Jediism religion and Geek Pride Day holiday. (25. May 1977)

The 1977 Hanafi Muslim Siege: more than 130 hostages held in Washington, D.C., by Hanafi Muslims are set free after ambassadors from three Islamic nations join negotiations. (11. March 1977)

In Southgate, Kentucky, the Beverly Hills Supper Club is engulfed in fire, killing 165 people inside. (28. May 1977)

The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System completed. (31. May 1977)

German Federal prosecutor Siegfried Buback and his driver are shot by two Red Army Faction members while waiting at a red light. (7. April 1977)

The Red Army Faction trial ends, with Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Jan-Carl Raspe found guilty of four counts of murder and more than 30 counts of attempted murder. (28. April 1977)

Tenerife airport disaster: Two Boeing 747 airliners collide on a foggy runway on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, killing 583 (all 248 on KLM and 335 on Pan Am). 61 survived on the Pan Am flight. This is the worst aviation accident in history. (27. March 1977)

A Chicago Transit Authority elevated train rear-ends another and derails, killing 11 and injuring 180, the worst accident in the agency's history. (4. February 1977)
