The Soviet Union begins mass deportations of Polish citizens from occupied eastern Poland to Siberia. (10. February 1940)

Finland initiates Winter War peace negotiations (29. February 1940)

The Yermolayev Yer-2, a long-range Soviet medium bomber, has its first flight. (14. May 1940)

World War II: Norwegian Campaign – Norwegian squads in Hegra Fortress and Vinjesvingen capitulate to German forces after all other Norwegian forces in southern Norway had laid down their arms. (5. May 1940)

World War II: The German 2nd Panzer Division captures the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer; the surrender of the last French and British troops marks the end of the Battle of Boulogne (25. May 1940)

Sino-Japanese War: Japan declares Nanking capital of a new Chinese puppet government, nominally controlled by Wang Jingwei. (30. March 1940)

A group of 728 Polish political prisoners from Tarnów become the first residents of the Auschwitz concentration camp. (14. June 1940)

Winter War: Finland signs the Moscow Peace Treaty with the Soviet Union, ceding almost all of Finnish Karelia. Finnish troops and the remaining population are immediately evacuated. (12. March 1940)

World War II: Germany invades Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. (10. May 1940)

World War II: Norwegian, French, Polish and British forces recapture Narvik in Norway. This is the first allied infantry victory of the War. (28. May 1940)

World War II: German leader Adolf Hitler surveys newly defeated Paris in now occupied France. (23. June 1940)

The Allies begin their attack on the Norwegian town of Narvik which is occupied by Nazi Germany. (15. April 1940)
