World War I: Austrian sabotage causes the sinking of the Italian battleship Leonardo da Vinci in Taranto. (2. August 1916)

Anzac Day is commemorated for the first time on the first anniversary of the landing at Anzac Cove. (25. April 1916)

World War I: The British 6th Indian Division surrenders to Ottoman Forces at the Siege of Kut in one of the largest surrenders of British forces up to that point. (29. April 1916)

Easter Rising: Martial law in Ireland is lifted and the rebellion is officially over with the surrender of Irish nationalists to British authorities in Dublin. (29. April 1916)

Romania declares war on Austria-Hungary, joining the Entente in World War I (14. August 1916)

World War I: First day on the Somme – On the first day of the Battle of the Somme 19,000 soldiers of the British Army are killed and 40,000 wounded. (1. July 1916)

USS Nevada (BB-36) is commissioned. The first US Navy "super-dreadnought". (11. March 1916)

Ernest Shackleton and five men of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition launch a lifeboat from uninhabited Elephant Island in the Southern Ocean to organise a rescue for the ice-trapped ship Endurance. (24. April 1916)

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson signs a bill incorporating the Boy Scouts of America, making them the only American youth organization with a federal charter. (15. June 1916)

Sailing in the lifeboat James Caird, Ernest Shackleton arrives at South Georgia after a journey of 800 nautical miles from Elephant Island. (10. May 1916)

An Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire led by Lawrence of Arabia breaks out. (10. June 1916)

Mary Pickford becomes the first female film star to sign a million dollar contract. (24. June 1916)

Black Tom Island explosion in Jersey City, New Jersey. (30. July 1916)
