Steve Biko is arrested at a police roadblock under the Terrorism Act No 83 of 1967 in King William's Town, South Africa. He would later die of the injuries sustained during this arrest bringing attention to South Africa's apartheid policies. (18. August 1977)

The Big Ear, a radio telescope operated by Ohio State University as part of the SETI project, receives a radio signal from deep space; the event is named the "Wow! signal" from the notation made by a volunteer on the project. (15. August 1977)

Somalia declares war on Ethiopia, starting the Ethiopian-Somali War. (13. July 1977)
Alexandr Zagirnyak and Gennadi Sheludko hijack a Tupolev Tu-134 en route from Petrozavodsk to Leningrad and try to force the pilot to fly to Sweden. The plane lands in Helsinki instead. The hijackers surrender the next day and are returned to the Soviet Union. (10. July 1977)

The George Jackson Brigade plants a bomb at the main power substation for the Washington state capitol in Olympia, in solidarity with a prison strike at the Walla Walla State Penitentiary Intensive Security Unit (4. July 1977)
Assassination of Kamal Jumblatt, the main leader of the anti-government forces in the Lebanese Civil War. (16. March 1977)
The Space Shuttle Enterprise test vehicle is carried on its maiden "flight" on top of a Boeing 747. (18. February 1977)
In Southgate, Kentucky, the Beverly Hills Supper Club is engulfed in fire, killing 165 people inside. (28. May 1977)
The Yorkshire Ripper kills 16 year old shop assistant Jayne MacDonald in Leeds, changing public perception of the killer as she is the first victim who is not a prostitute. (26. June 1977)
Hotel Polen fire: A disastrous fire burns down the Hotel Polen in Amsterdam causing 33 deaths and 21 severe injuries. (9. May 1977)
