Japan Airlines Flight 123 crashes into Osutaka ridge in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, killing 520, to become the worst single-plane air disaster. (12. August 1985)

Takao Doi, Mamoru Mohri and Chiaki Mukai are chosen to be Japan's first astronauts. (7. August 1985)

U.S.S.R performs nuclear tests at Eastern Kazakhstan/Semipalatinsk. (19. April 1985)

Associated Press newsman Terry Anderson is taken hostage in Beirut. He is released on December 4, 1991. (16. March 1985)

A strong earthquake kills thousands and destroys about 400 buildings in Mexico City. (19. September 1985)

EastEnders BBC's flagship soap opera broadcasts for the first time. (19. February 1985)

Radio Martí, part of the Voice of America service, begins broadcasting to Cuba. (20. May 1985)

A magnitude 8.3 earthquake struck the Valparaíso Region of Chile, killing 177 and leaving nearly a million people homeless. (3. March 1985)

U.S. Route 66 is officially removed from the United States Highway System. (27. June 1985)

The discovery of Buckminsterfullerene, the first fullerene molecule of carbon. (4. September 1985)

Thomas Sutherland is kidnapped in Lebanon. He will not be released until 1991. (9. June 1985)

The Val di Stava dam collapses killing 268 people in Val di Stava, Italy. (19. July 1985)

A joint American–French expedition locates the wreckage of the RMS Titanic. (1. September 1985)

Bradford City stadium fire: Fifty-six spectators die and more than 200 are injured in a flash fire at Valley Parade football ground during a match against Lincoln City in Bradford, England. (11. May 1985)

Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev declares a moratorium on the deployment of middle-range missiles in Europe. (7. April 1985)

The Food and Drug Administration approves a blood test for AIDS infection, used since then for screening all blood donations in the United States. (4. March 1985)

Pete Rose breaks Ty Cobb's baseball record for most career hits with his 4,192nd hit (11. September 1985)

Capital gains tax is introduced in Australia, one of a number of tax reforms by the Hawke/Keating government. (20. September 1985)
