The Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Yemen join the United Nations. (30. September 1947)

Thirteen thousand troops sent by the Kuomintang government of China arrive in Taiwan after the 228 Incident and launch crackdowns which kill thousands of people, including many elites. This turns into a major root of the Taiwan independence movement. (8. March 1947)

First Indochina War: French forces carry out a massacre at Mỹ Trạch, Vietnam. (29. November 1947)

The Journey of Reconciliation, the first interracial Freedom Ride begins through the upper South in violation of Jim Crow laws. The riders wanted enforcement of the United States Supreme Court's 1946 Irene Morgan decision that banned racial segregation in interstate travel. (9. April 1947)

The National Security Council and the Central Intelligence Agency are established in the United States under the National Security Act. (18. September 1947)

The Exodus 1947 heads to Palestine from France. (11. July 1947)

The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which is the foundation of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), is founded. (30. October 1947)

The "Indian Independence Bill" is presented before the British House of Commons, proposing the independence of the Provinces of British India into two sovereign countries: India and Pakistan. (4. July 1947)

The Prime Minister of the shadow Burmese government, Bogyoke Aung San and 6 of his cabinet and 2 non-cabinet members are assassinated by Galon U Saw. (19. July 1947)

The Roswell incident, the (supposed) crash of an alien spaceship near Roswell in New Mexico. (7. July 1947)

The Screen Actors Guild implements an anti-Communist loyalty oath. (17. November 1947)

Partition Plan: The United Nations General Assembly approves a plan for the partition of Palestine. (29. November 1947)

The Supreme Court of Japan is established. (4. August 1947)

Paul becomes king of Greece, on the death of his childless elder brother, George II. (1. April 1947)

Cold War: in an effort to fight the spread of Communism, the U.S. President Harry S. Truman signs an act into law that will later be called the Truman Doctrine. The act grants $400 million in military and economic aid to Turkey and Greece, each battling an internal Communist movement. (22. May 1947)

The Diary of a Young Girl (better known as The Diary of Anne Frank) is published. (25. June 1947)

Captain Chuck Yeager of the U.S. Air Force flies a Bell X-1 rocket-powered experimental aircraft, the Glamorous Glennis, faster than the speed of sound - over the high desert of Southern California - and becomes the first pilot and the first airplane to do so in level flight. (14. October 1947)

American scientists John Bardeen and Walter Houser Brattain observe the basic principles of the transistor, a key element for the electronics revolution of the 20th century. (17. November 1947)

The Glazier–Higgins–Woodward tornadoes kill 181 and injure 970 in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. (9. April 1947)
