A Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 747 and a Kazakh Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane collide in mid-air near New Delhi, killing 349. The deadliest mid-air collision to date. (12. November 1996)

Suspected "Unabomber" Theodore Kaczynski is captured at his cabin in Montana, United States. (3. April 1996)

The Trappist Martyrs of Atlas, kidnapped during the Algerian Civil War and held for two months, are found dead. (21. May 1996)

Ted Kaczynski, suspected of being the Unabomber, is indicted on ten criminal counts. (18. June 1996)

NASA announces that the ALH 84001 meteorite, thought to originate from Mars, contains evidence of primitive life-forms. (6. August 1996)

Battle of Mullaitivu: the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam capture the Sri Lanka Army's base, killing over 1200 soldiers. (18. July 1996)

After the aircraft's departure from Miami, Florida, a fire started by improperly handled chemical oxygen generators in the cargo hold of Atlanta-bound ValuJet Flight 592 causes the Douglas DC-9 to crash in the Florida Everglades killing all 110 on board. (11. May 1996)

An 81-day-long standoff between the anti-government group Montana Freemen and law enforcement near Jordan, Montana, begins. (25. March 1996)

A Belgian Air Force C-130 Hercules carrying the Royal Netherlands Army marching band crashes on landing at Eindhoven Airport. (15. July 1996)
