World War I: Germany signs an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car in the forest of Compiègne, France. The fighting officially ends at 11:00 a.m., (the eleventh hour in the eleventh month on the eleventh day) and this is annually honoured with a two-minute silence. The war officially ends on the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28th June, 1919. (11. November 1918)

A massive forest fire kills 453 people in Minnesota. (12. October 1918)

A pogrom takes place in Lwów (now Lviv); over three days, at least 50 Jews and 270 Ukrainian Christians are killed by Poles. (21. November 1918)

Russian Civil War: The Red Army captures Kazan. (10. September 1918)

World War I: In the Argonne Forest in France, United States Corporal Alvin C. York kills 28 German soldiers and captures 132, for which he is awarded the Medal of Honor. (8. October 1918)

World War I: Actors Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin sell war bonds on the streets of New York City's financial district. (8. April 1918)

The Sedition Act of 1918 is passed by the U.S. Congress, making criticism of the government during wartime an imprisonable offense. It will be repealed less than two years later. (16. May 1918)

Józef Piłsudski assumes supreme military power in Poland - symbolic first day of Polish independence. (11. November 1918)

World War I: Germans repel the British's second attempt to blockade the port of Ostend, Belgium. (9. May 1918)
