Project Gemini: Gemini 6A, crewed by Wally Schirra and Thomas Stafford, is launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida. Four orbits later, it achieves the first space rendezvous, with Gemini 7. (15. December 1965)

Hurricane Betsy makes its second landfall near New Orleans, Louisiana, leaving 76 dead and $1.42 billion ($10–12 billion in 2005 dollars) in damages, becoming the first hurricane to top $1 billion in unadjusted damages. (9. September 1965)

Pakistan's Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) successfully launches its seventh rocket in its Rehber series. (29. April 1965)

The Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act 1965 is given Royal Assent, formally abolishing the death penalty in the United Kingdom. (8. November 1965)

Cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov, leaving his spacecraft Voskhod 2 for 12 minutes, became the first person to walk in space. (18. March 1965)

Vietnam War: Just miles from Da Nang, United States Marines repel an intense attack by wave after wave of Viet Cong forces, killing 56 guerrillas. (30. October 1965)

An Iberia Airlines Convair 440 crashes into the sea on approach to Tangier, killing 47 of 51 occupants. (31. March 1965)

Duane Earl Pope robs the Farmers' State Bank of Big Springs, Nebraska, killing three people execution-style and severely wounding a fourth. The crime later puts Pope on the FBI Ten Most Wanted list. (4. June 1965)

In the Hammaguir launch facility in the Sahara Desert, France launches a Diamant-A rocket with its first satellite, Asterix-1, on board. (26. November 1965)

In the United Kingdom, a 70 mph speed limit is applied to all rural roads including motorways for the first time. Previously, there had been no speed limit. (22. December 1965)

Vietnam War: American warships begin the first bombardment of National Liberation Front targets within South Vietnam. (27. May 1965)

Launch of Early Bird, the first communications satellite to be placed in geosynchronous orbit. (6. April 1965)

The Canadian Space Agency launches the satellite Alouette 2. (29. November 1965)

Indo-Pakistani War: The Indian Army captures the town of Burki, just southeast of Lahore. (11. September 1965)

The 1964–1965 New York World's Fair opens for its second and final season. (21. April 1965)

Ferdinand Marcos becomes President of the Philippines. (30. December 1965)

The British Government announces the cancellation of the TSR-2 aircraft project. (6. April 1965)

Ranger program: NASA launches Ranger 9, the last in a series of unmanned lunar space probes. (21. March 1965)

United States occupation of the Dominican Republic: American troops land in the Dominican Republic to "forestall establishment of a Communist dictatorship" and to evacuate U.S. Army troops. (28. April 1965)

Vietnam War: the first 4,000 101st Airborne Division paratroopers arrive in Vietnam, landing at Cam Ranh Bay. (29. July 1965)
