The Soviet Union launches the Voskhod 1 into Earth orbit as the first spacecraft with a multi-person crew and the first flight without space suits (12. October 1964)

Vietnam War: 5,000 more American military advisers are sent to South Vietnam bringing the total number of United States forces in Vietnam to 21,000. (27. July 1964)

The Council of Europe declares May 5 as Europe Day. (5. May 1964)

First Buffalo Wings are made at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York. (3. October 1964)

Malcolm X forms the Organization of Afro-American Unity. (28. June 1964)

The 1964-1965 New York World's Fair closes for its first season after a six-month run. (18. October 1964)

DSV Alvin is commissioned. (5. June 1964)

Malawi declares its independence from the United Kingdom. (6. July 1964)

Jerrie Mock becomes the first woman to circumnavigate the world by air. (17. April 1964)

The Belgian Congo is renamed the Democratic Republic of the Congo. (1. August 1964)

Pacific Air Lines Flight 773, a Fairchild F-27 airliner, crashes near San Ramon, California, killing all 44 aboard; the FBI later reports that a cockpit recorder tape indicates that the pilot and co-pilot had been shot by a suicidal passenger. (7. May 1964)

The Palestine Liberation Organization is formed. (28. May 1964)

Ronald Reagan delivers a speech on behalf of Republican candidate for president, Barry Goldwater. The speech launched his political career and came to be known as "A Time for Choosing". (27. October 1964)

Vietnam War: the U.S. Congress passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution giving U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson broad war powers to deal with North Vietnamese attacks on American forces. (7. August 1964)

At the Academy Awards, Sidney Poitier becomes the first African-American male to win the Best Actor award for the 1963 film Lilies of the Field. (13. April 1964)

Ford Mustang is introduced to the North American market. (17. April 1964)

Peter Allen and Gwynne Evans are hanged for the Murder of John Alan West becoming the last people executed in the United Kingdom. (13. August 1964)
