The International Military Tribunal for the Far East begins in Tokyo with twenty-eight Japanese military and government officials accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity. (5. May 1946)

An earthquake of magnitude 8.0 hits northern Dominican Republic. 100 are killed and 20,000 are left homeless. (4. August 1946)

The Interim Government of India is formed with Jawaharlal Nehru as Vice President with the powers of a Prime Minister. (2. September 1946)

Clark Clifford and George Elsey, military advisers to U.S. President Harry S. Truman, present him with a top-secret report on the Soviet Union that first recommends the containment policy. (24. September 1946)

UMNO is created. (11. May 1946)

The All Hyderabad Trade Union Congress is founded in Secunderabad. (16. August 1946)

Cathay Pacific Airways is founded in Hong Kong. (24. September 1946)

Ion Antonescu, "Conducator" (leader) of Romania during World War II, is executed. (1. June 1946)

A fire in the La Salle Hotel in Chicago, Illinois, kills 61 people. (5. June 1946)

While riding a train to Darjeeling, Sister Teresa Bojaxhiu of the Loreto Sisters' Convent claimed to have heard the call of God, directing her "to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them". She would become known as Mother Teresa. (10. September 1946)

Santa Claus Land, the world's first themed amusement park, opens in Santa Claus, Indiana, United States. (3. August 1946)

The first Cannes Film Festival is held, having been delayed seven years due to World War II. (20. September 1946)
