After being appointed on May 15, Anna Mae Hays and Elizabeth P. Hoisington officially receive their ranks as U.S. Army Generals, becoming the first females to do so. (11. June 1970)

Vietnam War: Kent State shootings: the Ohio National Guard, sent to Kent State University after disturbances in the city of Kent the weekend before, opens fire killing four unarmed students and wounding nine others. The students were protesting the United States' invasion of Cambodia. (4. May 1970)

The Troubles: the "Falls Curfew" begins in Belfast, Northern Ireland. (3. July 1970)

Club Cinq-Sept fire in Saint-Laurent-du-Pont, France kills 146 young people. (1. November 1970)

In response to the October Crisis terrorist kidnapping, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau of Canada invokes the War Measures Act. (16. October 1970)

Fiji joins the United Nations. (13. October 1970)

Thirty-five construction workers are killed when a section of the new West Gate Bridge in Melbourne collapses. (15. October 1970)

Two passenger jets bound from Europe to New York are simultaneously hijacked by Palestinian terrorist members of the PFLP and taken to Dawson's Field in Jordan. (6. September 1970)

Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser dies of a heart attack in Cairo. Anwar Sadat is named as Nasser's temporary successor, and will later become the permanent successor. (28. September 1970)

Palestinian terrorists blow up three hijacked airliners in Jordan, continuing to hold the passengers hostage in various undisclosed locations in Amman. (12. September 1970)

Thor Heyerdahl sets sail from Morocco on the papyrus boat Ra II to sail the Atlantic Ocean. (17. May 1970)

Vietnam War: US President Richard Nixon announces that the United States will withdraw 40,000 more troops before Christmas (12. October 1970)
