The ferry George Prince is struck by a ship while crossing the Mississippi River between Destrehan and Luling, Louisiana. Seventy-eight passengers and crew die and only 18 people aboard the ferry survive. (20. October 1976)

New Premier Hua Guofeng orders the arrest of the Gang of Four and associates and ends the Cultural Revolution in the People's Republic of China. (6. October 1976)

Apneist Jacques Mayol is the first man to reach a depth of 100 m undersea without breathing equipment. (23. November 1976)

The Yuba City bus disaster occurs in Martinez, California. 29 are killed making it the deadliest road accident in U.S. history. (21. May 1976)

Portugal grants autonomy to Madeira. (1. July 1976)

The American Viking 1 lander successfully lands on Mars. (20. July 1976)

Capital punishment is abolished in Canada. (14. July 1976)

The London to Washington, D.C., Concorde service begins. (24. May 1976)

A group of Croatian nationalists planted a bomb in a coin locker at Grand Central Terminal. After stating political demands, they revealed the location and provided instructions for disarming the bomb. The disarming operation was not executed properly, killing one NYPD bomb squad specialist. (11. September 1976)

Cubana Flight 455 crashes into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after taking off from Bridgetown, Barbados, after two bombs, placed on board by terrorists with connections to the CIA, exploded. All 73 people on board are killed. (6. October 1976)

Japan completes its last reparation to the Philippines for war crimes committed during the imperial Japan's conquest of the country in the Second World War (22. July 1976)

Shavarsh Karapetyan saves 20 people from the trolleybus that had fallen into Erevan reservoir. (16. September 1976)
