The Supreme Soviet of the Belarusian Soviet Republic declares independence of Belarus from the Soviet Union. Until 1996 the day is celebrated as the Independence Day of Belarus; after a referendum held that year the celebration of independence is moved to June 3. (27. July 1990)

Russia Day – the parliament of the Russian Federation formally declares its sovereignty. (12. June 1990)

In France, a modified TGV train achieves a new rail world speed record of 515.3 km/h (320.2 mph). (18. May 1990)

The former Philippine Episcopal Church (supervised by the Episcopal Church of the United States of America) is granted full autonomy and raised to the status of an Autocephalous Anglican Province and renamed the Episcopal Church of the Philippines. (1. May 1990)

George H. W. Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev sign a treaty to end chemical weapon production. (1. June 1990)

The Luzon Earthquake strikes in Benguet, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, La Union, Aurora, Bataan, Zambales and Tarlac, Philippines, with an intensity of 7.7. (16. July 1990)

British Airways Flight 5390 lands safely at Southampton Airport after a blowout in the cockpit causes the captain to be partially sucked from the cockpit. There are no fatalities (10. June 1990)

George Steinbrenner is forced by Commissioner Fay Vincent to resign as principal partner of New York Yankees for hiring Howie Spira to "get dirt" on Dave Winfield. (30. July 1990)

The Democratic Republic of Yemen and North Yemen agree to merge into the Republic of Yemen. (21. May 1990)

The Parliament of the Ukrainian SSR declares state sovereignty over the territory of the Ukrainian SSR. (16. July 1990)

Iraqi forces start massing on the Kuwait-Iraq border. (24. July 1990)

The Jamaat al Muslimeen attempt a coup d'état in Trinidad and Tobago, occupying the Trinidad and the studios of Trinidad and Tobago Television, holding Prime Minister A. N. R. Robinson and most of his Cabinet as well as the staff at the television station hostage for 6 days. (27. July 1990)

The Russian parliament elects Boris Yeltsin as president of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. (29. May 1990)

The General Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) eliminates homosexuality from the list of psychiatric diseases. (17. May 1990)

The Lower Ohio Valley tornado outbreak spawns 66 confirmed tornadoes in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio, killing 12. Petersburg, Indiana, is the hardest-hit town in the outbreak, with 6 deaths. (2. June 1990)

Latvia proclaims the renewal of its independence after the Soviet occupation. (4. May 1990)

German reunification: East Germany accepts the Deutsche Mark as its currency, thus uniting the economies of East and West Germany. (1. July 1990)

The Communist Party of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic is founded in Moscow. (19. June 1990)

The first post-Communist presidential and parliamentary elections are held in Romania. (20. May 1990)

Oka Crisis: First Nations land dispute in Quebec, Canada begins. (11. July 1990)
