The four-day Attica Prison riot begins, which eventually results in 39 dead, most killed by state troopers retaking the prison. (9. September 1971)

Mars probe program: Mars 2 is launched by the Soviet Union. (19. May 1971)

Vietnam War: The New York Times begins publication of the Pentagon Papers. (13. June 1971)

Apollo program: Apollo 15 Mission – David Scott and James Irwin on the Apollo Lunar Module module Falcon land on the Moon with the first Lunar Rover. (30. July 1971)

Typhoon Nancy, with possibly the strongest winds ever measured in a tropical cyclone, makes landfall in Osaka, Japan, killing 173 people. (16. September 1971)

Soyuz program: Soyuz 11 is launched. (6. June 1971)

An attempted coup fails in the African nation of Chad. The Government of Chad accuses Egypt of playing a role in the attempt and breaks off diplomatic relations. (27. August 1971)

State police and National Guardsmen storm New York's Attica Prison to end a prison revolt. (13. September 1971)

President Richard Nixon completes the break from the gold standard by ending convertibility of the United States dollar into gold by foreign investors. (15. August 1971)

The first Pacific Islands Forum (then known as the "South Pacific Forum") is held in Wellington, New Zealand, with the aim of enhancing cooperation between the independent countries of the Pacific Ocean. (5. August 1971)

Bahrain, Bhutan and Qatar join the United Nations. (21. September 1971)
