Northern Ireland's power-sharing Sunningdale Agreement collapses following a general strike by loyalists. (28. May 1974)

Isabel Perón is sworn in as the first female President of Argentina. Her husband, President Juan Peron, had delegated responsibility due to weak health and died two days later. (29. June 1974)

The first ulnar collateral ligament replacement surgery (Tommy John surgery) performed, on baseball player Tommy John. (25. September 1974)

Guinea-Bissau gains independence from Portugal. (10. September 1974)

The Argentine terrorist organization Montoneros is expelled from Plaza de Mayo by president Juan Perón. (1. May 1974)

The Airbus A300 passenger aircraft first enters service. (30. May 1974)

Vietnam War: The U.S. Congress places a $1 billion limit on military aid to South Vietnam. (5. August 1974)

The Heimlich maneuver for rescuing choking victims is published in the journal Emergency Medicine. (1. June 1974)

Thirty-three civilians are killed and over 300 injured when the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) explodes car bombs in Dublin and Monaghan, Republic of Ireland. It is the highest number of casualties in any one day during The Troubles. An Irish parliament committee, and others, allege that British security forces were involved. (17. May 1974)

During Ten Cent Beer Night, inebriated Cleveland Indians fans start a riot, causing the game to be forfeited to the Texas Rangers. (4. June 1974)

The Universal Product Code is scanned for the first time to sell a package of Wrigley's chewing gum at the Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio (26. June 1974)

The second Turkish invasion of Cyprus begins; 140,000 to 200,000 Greek Cypriots become refugees. 6,000 massacred, 1,619 missing. (14. August 1974)

Yuk Young-soo, First Lady of South Korea, is killed during an apparent assassination attempt upon President, Park Chung-hee. (15. August 1974)

A Belgrade–Dortmund express train derails at the main train station in Zagreb killing 153 passengers. (30. August 1974)

Josip Broz Tito is re-elected president of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. This time he is elected for life. (16. May 1974)

Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, 'Messiah' of the Rastafari movement, is deposed following a military coup by the Derg, ending a reign of 58 years. (12. September 1974)

Konstantinos Karamanlis arrives in Greece following the collapse of the Greek military junta, beginning Greece's metapolitefsi era. (24. July 1974)

Eastern Air Lines Flight 212 crashes in Charlotte, North Carolina, killing 69 passengers and two crew. (11. September 1974)
