General Postal Union is created as a result of the Treaty of Berne. (9. October 1874)

The Sholes and Glidden typewriter, the first commercially successful typewriter, goes on sale. (1. July 1874)

Japan launches its postal savings system, modeled after a similar system in the United Kingdom. (5. August 1874)

Aires de Ornelas e Vasconcelos is appointed the Archbishop of the Portuguese colonial enclave of Goa, India. (23. July 1874)

The United States Greenback Party is established as a political party consisting primarily of farmers affected by the Panic of 1873. (25. November 1874)

A cartoon by Thomas Nast in Harper's Weekly, is considered the first important use of an elephant as a symbol for the United States Republican Party. (7. November 1874)
