Al-Aqsa Intifada: Ariel Sharon visits Al-Aqsa Mosque known to Jews as the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. (28. September 2000)

George W. Bush is certified the winner of Florida's electoral votes by Katherine Harris, going on to win the United States presidential election, despite losing in the national popular vote. (26. November 2000)

Rizal Day bombings: A series of bombs explode in various places in Metro Manila, Philippines within a period of a few hours, killing 22 and injuring about a hundred. (30. December 2000)

Train crash at Hatfield, north of London, leading to collapse of Railtrack. (17. October 2000)

The Leninist Guerrilla Units wing of the Communist Labour Party of Turkey/Leninist attack a Nationalist Movement Party office in Istanbul, Turkey, killing one person and injuring three. (19. December 2000)

Yugoslav president Slobodan Milošević resigns. (6. October 2000)

Operation Barras successfully frees six British soldiers held captive for over two weeks and contributes to the end of the Sierra Leone Civil War. (10. September 2000)

The "Texas Seven" escape from the John B. Connally Unit near Kenedy, Texas, and go on a robbery spree, during which police officer Aubrey Hawkins is shot and killed. (13. December 2000)

Hillary Rodham Clinton is elected to the United States Senate, becoming the first former First Lady to win public office in the United States, although she was actually still the First Lady. (7. November 2000)

Alberto Fujimori is removed from office as president of Peru. (17. November 2000)

The MS Express Samina sinks off Paros in the Aegean sea killing 80 passengers. (26. September 2000)

Gulf Air Flight 072 crashes into the Persian Gulf near Manama, Bahrain, killing 143. (23. August 2000)

Kaprun disaster: 155 skiers and snowboarders die when a cable car catches fire in an alpine tunnel in Kaprun, Austria. (11. November 2000)

Air France Flight 4590, a Concorde supersonic passenger jet, F-BTSC, crashes just after takeoff from Paris killing all 109 aboard and 4 on the ground. (25. July 2000)

NASA launches STS-92, the 100th Space Shuttle mission, using Space Shuttle Discovery. (11. October 2000)

Israel complies with United Nations Security Council Resolution 425 22 years after its issuance, which calls on Israel to completely withdraw from Lebanon. Israel does so, except the disputed Shebaa Farms. (16. June 2000)

The third reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is shut down. (15. December 2000)
