World War II: The Allied invasion of Italy concludes when Heinrich von Vietinghoff, commander of the German Tenth Army, orders his troops to withdraw from Salerno. (16. September 1943)

World War II: Kharkov is liberated as a result of the Battle of Kursk. (23. August 1943)

World War II: Operation Gomorrah begins: British and Canadian aeroplanes bomb Hamburg by night, and American planes by day. By the end of the operation in November, 9,000 tons of explosives will have killed more than 30,000 people and destroyed 280,000 buildings. (24. July 1943)

A fire at the Gulf Hotel in Houston, Texas, kills 55 people. (7. September 1943)

World War II: Start of the liquidation of the Ghettos in Minsk and Lida by the Nazis. (11. September 1943)

In Los Angeles, California, white U.S. Navy sailors and Marines clash with Latino youths in the Zoot Suit Riots. (3. June 1943)

World War II: The Jews of Minsk are massacred at Sobibór. (18. September 1943)

World War II: Adolf Hitler orders the deportation of Danish Jews. (18. September 1943)

The Pennsylvania Railroad's premier train derails at Frankford Junction in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, killing 79 people and injuring 117 others. (6. September 1943)

German-occupied Denmark scuttles most of its navy; Germany dissolves the Danish government. (29. August 1943)

World War II: The O.B.S. (German General Headquarters for the Mediterranean zone) in Frascati is bombed by USAAF. (8. September 1943)

World War II: German forces begin a massive offensive against the Soviet Union at the Battle of Kursk. Also known as Operation Citadel (5. July 1943)

World War II: United States General Dwight D. Eisenhower publicly announces the Allied armistice with Italy. (8. September 1943)

The Holocaust: Jews in the Częstochowa Ghetto in Poland stage an uprising against the Nazis. (25. June 1943)

The Monterrey Institute of Technology, one of the largest and most influential private universities in Latin America, is founded in Monterrey, Mexico. (6. September 1943)

World War II: The U.S. Seventh Army under General George S. Patton arrives in Messina, Italy, followed several hours later by the British 8th Army under Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, thus completing the Allied conquest of Sicily. (17. August 1943)

Tokyo City merges with Tokyo Prefecture and is dissolved. Since then, no city in Japan has had the name "Tokyo" (present-day Tokyo is not officially a city). (1. July 1943)

World War II: The Nazi puppet state the Italian Social Republic is founded. (23. September 1943)

World War II: the Motor Torpedo Boat PT-109 is rammed by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri and sinks. Lt. John F. Kennedy, future U.S. President, saves all but two of his crew. (2. August 1943)
