Gulf Air Flight 072 crashes into the Persian Gulf near Manama, Bahrain, killing 143. (23. August 2000)

A powerful solar flare, later named the Bastille Day event, causes a geomagnetic storm on Earth. (14. July 2000)

Melbourne hosts World Economic Forum where S11 protests also took place. (11. September 2000)

Israel complies with United Nations Security Council Resolution 425 22 years after its issuance, which calls on Israel to completely withdraw from Lebanon. Israel does so, except the disputed Shebaa Farms. (16. June 2000)

Operation Barras successfully frees six British soldiers held captive for over two weeks and contributes to the end of the Sierra Leone Civil War. (10. September 2000)

A leaking southern Nigerian petroleum pipeline explodes, killing about 250 villagers scavenging gasoline. (10. July 2000)

The Six-Day War in Kisangani begins in Kisangani, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, between Ugandan and Rwandan forces. A large part of the city is destroyed. (5. June 2000)

President Kim Dae Jung of South Korea meets Kim Jong-il, leader of North Korea, for the beginning of the first ever inter-Korea summit, in the northern capital of Pyongyang. (13. June 2000)

Anti-globalization protests in Prague (some 20,000 protesters) turn violent during the IMF and World Bank summits. (26. September 2000)

Microsoft releases Windows ME. (14. September 2000)

The Oscar class submarine K-141 Kursk of the Russian Navy explodes and sinks in the Barents Sea during a military exercise. (12. August 2000)

The United Kingdom's MI6 Secret Intelligence Service building is attacked by individuals using a Russian-built RPG-22 anti-tank missile. The perpetrators remain unidentified. (20. September 2000)

The 540-metre (1,772 ft)-tall Ostankino Tower in Moscow catches fire, three people are killed. (27. August 2000)

Al-Aqsa Intifada: Ariel Sharon visits Al-Aqsa Mosque known to Jews as the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. (28. September 2000)

Section 28 (of the Local Government Act 1988), outlawing the 'promotion' of homosexuality in the United Kingdom, is repealed in Scotland with a 99 to 17 vote. (21. June 2000)
