World War II: Battle of Guam – American troops land on Guam starting the battle. It would end on August 10. (21. July 1944)

World War II: 168 captured allied airmen, including Phil Lamason, accused by the Gestapo of being "terror fliers", arrive at Buchenwald concentration camp. (20. August 1944)

Athens, Greece, is liberated by British Army troops entering the city as the Wehrmacht pulls out during World War II. This clears the way for the Greek government-in-exile to return to its historic capital city, with George Papandreou, Sr., as the head-of-government. (14. October 1944)
