German Autumn: Four days after it is hijacked, Lufthansa Flight 181 lands in Mogadishu, Somalia, where a team of German GSG 9 commandos later rescues all remaining hostages on board. (17. October 1977)

Voyager program: Voyager 1 is launched after a brief delay. (5. September 1977)

Hanns Martin Schleyer is kidnapped in Cologne, West Germany by the Red Army Faction and is later murdered. (5. September 1977)

The Torrijos-Carter Treaties between Panama and the United States on the status of the Panama Canal are signed. The United States agrees to transfer control of the canal to Panama at the end of the 20th century. (7. September 1977)

Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crashes. (20. October 1977)

The National Assembly of Quebec imposes the use of French as the official language of the provincial government. (26. July 1977)

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is admitted to the United Nations. (20. September 1977)

Military coup in Pakistan: Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the first elected Prime Minister of Pakistan, is overthrown. (5. July 1977)

U.S. President Jimmy Carter signs legislation creating the United States Department of Energy. (4. August 1977)

Ali Maow Maalin, the last natural case of smallpox, develops rash in Merca district, Somalia. The World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consider this date the anniversary of the eradication of smallpox, the most spectacular success of vaccination. (26. Hamida Djandoubi, convicted of torture and murder, is the last person to be executed by guillotine in France. (10. September 1977)

The start of the four day long Libyan–Egyptian War. (21. July 1977)

Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping is restored to power. (22. July 1977)

German Autumn: a set of events revolving around the kidnapping of Hanns-Martin Schleyer and the hijacking of a Lufthansa flight by the Red Army Faction (RAF) comes to an end when Schleyer is murdered and various RAF members allegedly commit suicide. (18. October 1977)

South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko dies in police custody. (12. September 1977)

The 300 metre tall CKVR-DT transmission tower in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, is hit by a light aircraft in a fog, causing it to collapse. All aboard the aircraft are killed. (7. September 1977)

Members of the British National Front (NF) clash with anti-NF demonstrators in Lewisham, London, resulting in 214 arrests and at least 111 injuries. (13. August 1977)

A United States Navy McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II crashes into a residential neighborhood in Yokohama, Japan, killing two children on the ground and injuring seven other people. (27. September 1977)
