The Kingdom of Poland is proclaimed by the Act of November 5th of the emperors of Germany and Austria-Hungary. (5. November 1916)

Prime Minister of Australia Billy Hughes is expelled from the Labor Party over his support for conscription. (13. November 1916)

World War I: First day on the Somme – On the first day of the Battle of the Somme 19,000 soldiers of the British Army are killed and 40,000 wounded. (1. July 1916)

Battle of Segale: Negus Mikael, marching on the Ethiopian capital in support of his son Emperor Iyasus V, is defeated by Fitawrari abte Giyorgis, securing the throne for Empress Zauditu. (27. October 1916)

Romania declares war on Austria-Hungary, joining the Entente in World War I (14. August 1916)

World War I: Leefe Robinson destroys the German airship Schütte-Lanz SL 11 over Cuffley, north of London; the first German airship to be shot down on British soil. (3. September 1916)

Samuel Goldwyn and Edgar Selwyn establish Goldwyn Pictures. (19. November 1916)

Black Tom Island explosion in Jersey City, New Jersey. (30. July 1916)
