World War II: Combat ends in the Pacific Theater: the Instrument of Surrender of Japan is signed by Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and accepted aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. (2. September 1945)

A group of the Venezuelan Armed Forces, led by Mario Vargas, Marcos Pérez Jiménez and Carlos Delgado Chalbaud, stages a coup d'état against then president Isaías Medina Angarita, who is overthrown by the end of the day. (18. October 1945)

Japanese forces on Wake Island, which they had held since December of 1941, surrender to U.S. Marines. (7. September 1945)

Vietnam declares its independence, forming the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. (2. September 1945)

The Allied Control Council, governing Germany after World War II, comes into being. (30. August 1945)

Second Sino-Japanese War: The Empire of Japan formally surrenders to China. (9. September 1945)

The Republic of China takes over administration of Taiwan following Japan's surrender to the Allies. (25. October 1945)

Baseball: Billy Sianis and his pet billy goat are ejected from Wrigley Field during Game 4 of the 1945 World Series (see Curse of the Billy Goat). (6. October 1945)

HMS Vestal is the last British Royal Navy ship to be sunk in the Second World War (26. July 1945)

World War II: Australian 9th Division forces liberate the Japanese-run Batu Lintang camp, a POW and civilian internment camp on the island of Borneo. (11. September 1945)

UNESCO is founded. (16. November 1945)

Cold War: United States troops arrive to partition the southern part of Korea in response to Soviet troops occupying the northern part of the peninsula a month earlier. (8. September 1945)

The BBC Light Programme radio station is launched for mainstream light entertainment and music. (29. July 1945)

The post-war legal processes against Philippe Pétain begins. (23. July 1945)

World War II: The former premier of Vichy France Pierre Laval is shot by a firing squad for treason. (15. October 1945)

Hong Kong is liberated from Japan by British Armed Forces. (30. August 1945)

Heavy fighting in Surabaya between Indonesian nationalists and returning colonialists after World War II, today celebrated as Heroes' Day (Hari Pahlawan). (10. November 1945)

A massive number of people, headed by CGT, gather in the Plaza de Mayo in Argentina to demand Juan Peron's release. It calls "el día de la lealtad peronista" (peronista loyalty day) (17. October 1945)

Iva Toguri D'Aquino, a Japanese-American suspected of being wartime radio propagandist Tokyo Rose, is arrested in Yokohama. (5. September 1945)
