The Ziqiang Institute, today known as Wuhan University, is founded by Zhang Zhidong, governor of Hubei and Hunan Provinces in late Qing Dynasty China, after his memorial to the throne is approved by the Qing Government. (29. November 1893)

Ibadan area becomes a British Protectorate after a treaty signed by Fijabi, the Baale of Ibadan with the British acting Governor of Lagos, George C. Denton. (15. August 1893)

Women's suffrage: in New Zealand, the Electoral Act of 1893 is consented to by the governor giving all women in New Zealand the right to vote. (19. September 1893)

Charles Duryea and his brother road-test the first American-made gasoline-powered automobile. (20. September 1893)

Parliament of the World's Religions opened in Chicago, where Swami Vivekananda delivers his speech on fanaticism, tolerance and the truth inherent in all religions. (11. September 1893)

France becomes the first country to introduce motor vehicle registration. (14. August 1893)

Women's Suffrage: Women in the U.S. state of Colorado are granted the right to vote, the second state to do so. (7. November 1893)

The end of one of the most dramatic Test Matches of all time. In the first to involve six days of play, England became the first team to win one after following on at Sydney. (20. December 1893)

The treaty of the Durand Line is signed between present day Pakistan and Afghanistan; the Durand Line has gained international recognition as an international border between the two nations. (12. November 1893)

First Matabele War: A patrol of 34 British South Africa Company soldiers is ambushed and annihilated by more than 3,000 Matabele warriors on the Shangani River in Matabeleland. (4. December 1893)

Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Pathétique, receives its première performance in St. Petersburg, only nine days before the composer's death. (28. October 1893)

The opera Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck is first performed. (23. December 1893)

Settlers make a land run for prime land in the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma. (16. September 1893)

The Genoa Cricket & Athletic Club, to become one of the oldest Italian football clubs, is established by British expats. (7. September 1893)
