Vietnam War: The 1st Cavalry Division (United States) (Airmobile), in conjunction with South Vietnamese forces, launches a new operation seeking to destroy North Vietnamese forces in Pleiku in the II Corps Tactical Zone (the Central Highlands). (23. October 1965)

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 (also known as the Second Kashmir War) between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, ends after the UN calls for a cease-fire. (22. September 1965)

War of 1965: India retaliates following Pakistan's Operation Grand Slam which resulted in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 that ends in a stalemate and follows the signing of the Tashkent Declaration. (6. September 1965)

Vietnam War: In a follow-up to August's Operation Starlight, United States Marines and South Vietnamese forces initiate Operation Piranha on the Batangan Peninsula. (7. September 1965)

The 1964-1965 New York World's Fair closes after a two year run. More than 51 million people had attended the two-year event. (17. October 1965)

The 30 September Movement attempts a coup against the Indonesian government, which is crushed by the military under Suharto and leads to a mass anti-communist purge, with over 500,000 people killed. (30. September 1965)

China announces that it will reinforce its troops on the Indian border. (7. September 1965)

Comet Ikeya-Seki approaches perihelion, passing 450,000 kilometers from the sun. (21. October 1965)

Indo-Pakistani War: The Indian Army captures the town of Burki, just southeast of Lahore. (11. September 1965)

General Suharto puts down an apparent coup attempt by the 30 September Movement in Indonesia. (1. October 1965)

Pakistan Navy raids Indian coasts without any resistance in Operation Dwarka, Pakistan celebrates Victory Day annually. (8. September 1965)

Hurricane Betsy makes its second landfall near New Orleans, Louisiana, leaving 76 dead and $1.42 billion ($10–12 billion in 2005 dollars) in damages, becoming the first hurricane to top $1 billion in unadjusted damages. (9. September 1965)

Vietnam War: Just miles from Da Nang, United States Marines repel an intense attack by wave after wave of Viet Cong forces, killing 56 guerrillas. (30. October 1965)

Nostra Aetate, the "Declaration on the Relation of the Church with Non-Christian Religions" of the Second Vatican Council, is promulgated by Pope Paul VI; it absolves the Jews of responsibility for the death of Jesus, reversing Innocent III's 760 year-old declaration. (28. October 1965)

Pope Paul VI arrives in New York, the first Pope to visit the United States of America and the Western hemisphere. (4. October 1965)

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is established. (9. September 1965)

The Lockheed L-100, the civilian version of the C-130 Hercules, is introduced. (30. September 1965)

Vietnam War: The Catholic Worker Movement stages an anti-war rally in Manhattan including a public burning of a draft card; the first such act to result in arrest under a new amendment to the Selective Service Act. (15. October 1965)
