The first prototype of the MiG-17 makes its maiden flight. (14. January 1950)

The Great Appalachian Storm of November 1950, known at the time as the "Storm of the Century", strikes New England with hurricane force winds resulting in massive forest blow-downs and storm surge damage along the Northeast coast including New York City. This storm also brings blizzard conditions to the Appalachian Mountains and Ohio Valley, becoming one of the worst storms of all time. 353 people die in the event. (25. November 1950)

The United Kingdom recognizes the People's Republic of China. The Republic of China severs diplomatic relations with the UK in response. (6. January 1950)

US General Dwight D. Eisenhower becomes Supreme Commander of NATO-Europe. (19. November 1950)

The Great Brinks Robbery – 11 thieves steal more than $2 million from an armored car company's offices in Boston, Massachusetts. (17. January 1950)

Korean War: North Korean troops initiate the Battle of Taejon. (14. July 1950)

American lawyer and government official Alger Hiss is convicted of perjury. (21. January 1950)

Lhamo Dondrub is officially named the 14th Dalai Lama. (17. November 1950)

Korean War: Troops from the People's Republic of China launch a massive counterattack in North Korea against South Korean and United Nations forces (Battle of the Ch'ongch'on River and Battle of Chosin Reservoir), ending any hopes of a quick end to the conflict. (26. November 1950)

Bhumibol Adulyadej crowns himself King Rama IX of Thailand. (5. May 1950)

Bhumibol Adulyadej marries Queen Sirikit after their quiet engagement in Lausanne, Switzerland on July 19, 1949. (28. April 1950)

Korean War: British troops arrive in Korea to bolster the US presence there. (29. August 1950)

A barge containing munitions destined for Pakistan explodes in the harbor at South Amboy, New Jersey, devastating the city. (19. May 1950)

Korean War: United Nations repel an offensive by North Korean divisions attempting to cross the Naktong River and assault the city of Taegu. (20. August 1950)

The Knesset passes a resolution that states Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. (23. January 1950)

The first successful ascent of an Eight-thousander; the summit of Annapurna is reached by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal. (3. June 1950)

Korean War: Task Force Smith – American and North Korean forces first clash, in the Battle of Osan. (5. July 1950)

United Nations troops recapture Seoul from North Korean forces. (26. September 1950)

Apartheid: In South Africa, the Group Areas Act is passed formally segregating races. (27. April 1950)

Indonesia is admitted to the United Nations. (26. September 1950)
