The Red Army Faction trial ends, with Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Jan-Carl Raspe found guilty of four counts of murder and more than 30 counts of attempted murder. (28. April 1977)

Minister of Internal Affairs Allan Highet announces that the national anthems of New Zealand shall be the traditional anthem "God Save the Queen" and "God Defend New Zealand", by Thomas Bracken (lyrics) and John Joseph Woods (music), both being of equal status as appropriate to the occasion. (21. November 1977)

TAP Portugal Flight 425 crashes in the Madeira Islands, killing 130. (19. November 1977)

A United States Navy McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II crashes into a residential neighborhood in Yokohama, Japan, killing two children on the ground and injuring seven other people. (27. September 1977)

In Yonkers, New York, 24-year-old postal employee David Berkowitz ("Son of Sam") is arrested for a series of killings in the New York City area over the period of one year. (10. August 1977)

President of the United States Jimmy Carter pardons nearly all American Vietnam War draft evaders, some of whom had emigrated to Canada. (21. January 1977)

Convicted Martin Luther King Jr. assassin James Earl Ray is recaptured after escaping from prison three days before. (13. June 1977)

Former Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr., is found guilty by the Philippine Military Commission No. 2 and is sentenced to death by firing squad. (25. November 1977)

Star Wars (retitled Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in 1981) is released in theaters, inspiring the Jediism religion and Geek Pride Day holiday. (25. May 1977)

The Central Intelligence Agency releases documents under the Freedom of Information Act revealing it had engaged in mind control experiments. (20. July 1977)

In Alicante, Spain, fascists attack a group of MCPV militants and sympathizers, and one MCPV sympathizer is killed. (6. October 1977)

The 1977 riots in Sri Lanka, targeting the minority Sri Lankan Tamil people, begin, less than a month after the United National Party came to power. Over 300 Tamils are killed. (12. August 1977)

London Transport's Silver Jubilee buses are launched. (11. April 1977)

Massacre of Atocha in Madrid, during the Spanish transition to democracy. (24. January 1977)

The Budapest Treaty on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms for the Purposes of Patent Procedure is signed. (28. April 1977)

In Southgate, Kentucky, the Beverly Hills Supper Club is engulfed in fire, killing 165 people inside. (28. May 1977)

The National Assembly of Quebec imposes the use of French as the official language of the provincial government. (26. July 1977)

Alexandr Zagirnyak and Gennadi Sheludko hijack a Tupolev Tu-134 en route from Petrozavodsk to Leningrad and try to force the pilot to fly to Sweden. The plane lands in Helsinki instead. The hijackers surrender the next day and are returned to the Soviet Union. (10. July 1977)

Apple Computer is incorporated. (3. January 1977)
