Eritreans vote overwhelmingly for independence from Ethiopia in a United Nations-monitored referendum. (23. April 1993)

General Motors sues NBC after Dateline NBC allegedly rigs two crashes intended to demonstrate that some GM pickups can easily catch fire if hit in certain places. NBC settles the lawsuit the next day. (8. February 1993)

Indian Border Security Force units kill 55 Kashmiri civilians in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir, in revenge after militants ambushed a BSF patrol. (6. January 1993)

Pope John Paul II starts his 8th annual World Youth Day in Denver's Mile High Stadium. (12. August 1993)

Czech Republic and Slovakia join the United Nations. (19. January 1993)

Sumitomo Chemical's resin plant in Nihama explodes, killing one worker and injuring three others. (4. July 1993)

Stari most, the "old bridge" in Bosnian Mostar built in 1566, collapses after several days of bombing. (9. November 1993)

450 prisoners rioted at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, Ohio, and continued to do so for ten days, citing grievances related to prison conditions, as well as the forced vaccination of Nation of Islam prisoners (for tuberculosis) against their religious beliefs. An earthquake hits India's Latur and Osmanabad district of Marathwada (Aurangabad division) in Maharashtra state leaving tens of thousands of people dead and many more homeless. (30. September 1993)

The flood of '93 ends at St. Louis, Missouri, 103 days after it began, as the Mississippi River falls below flood stage. (7. October 1993)

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents raid the Branch Davidian church in Waco, Texas with a warrant to arrest the group's leader David Koresh. Four BATF agents and five Davidians die in the initial raid, starting a 51-day standoff. (28. February 1993)

The Intel Corporation ships the first Pentium chips (80586), featuring a 60 MHz clock speed, 100+ MIPS, and a 64 bit data path. (22. March 1993)
