The deadliest November tornado outbreak in U.S. history strikes on Thanksgiving day. Twenty-seven twisters of great strength are reported in the Midwest, including the strongest November tornado, an estimated F4, that devastates Heber Springs, Arkansas. There are 51 deaths in Arkansas alone, 76 deaths and over 400 injuries in all. (25. November 1926)

Admiral Richard E. Byrd and Floyd Bennett claim to have flown over the North Pole (later discovery of Byrd's diary appears to cast some doubt on the claim.) (9. May 1926)

Knoebels Amusement Resort is opened in Elysburg, Pennsylvania. (4. July 1926)

The children's book Winnie-the-Pooh, by A. A. Milne, is first published. (14. October 1926)

The College Board administers the first SAT exam. (23. June 1926)

Germany is admitted to the League of Nations. (8. September 1926)

Sholom Schwartzbard assassinates Symon Petliura, the head of the government of the Ukrainian People's Republic, which is in government-in-exile in Paris. (25. May 1926)

The Treaty of Berlin is signed. Germany and the Soviet Union each pledge neutrality in the event of an attack on the other by a third party for the next five years. (24. April 1926)

Japan's public broadcasting company, Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai (NHK) is established. (20. August 1926)

In the United States the National Broadcasting Company is formed. (9. September 1926)

The United States Numbered Highway System, including U.S. Route 66, is established. (11. November 1926)

Harry Houdini's last performance, which is at the Garrick Theatre in Detroit, Michigan. (24. October 1926)

Emperor Taishō of Japan dies. His son, Prince Hirohito, succeeds him as Emperor Shōwa. (25. December 1926)

Gertrude Ederle becomes the first woman to swim across the English Channel. (6. August 1926)

Arthur Meighen returns to office as Prime Minister of Canada. (29. June 1926)

Western Electric and Warner Bros. announce Vitaphone, a process to add sound to film. (20. April 1926)

28 May 1926 coup d'état: Ditadura Nacional is established in Portugal to suppress the unrest of the First Republic. (28. May 1926)

El Virilla train accident, Costa Rica: A train falls off a bridge over the Río Virilla between Heredia and Tibás. 248 are killed and 93 wounded. (14. March 1926)

The NBC radio network opens with 24 stations. (15. November 1926)

Brazil leaves the League of Nations (14. June 1926)
