STS-31: The Hubble Space Telescope is launched from the Space Shuttle Discovery. Shuttle mission STS-31 lifts off, carrying Hubble into orbit. (24. April 1990)

German reunification. The German Democratic Republic ceases to exist and its territory becomes part of the Federal Republic of Germany. East German citizens became part of the European Community, which later became the European Union. Now celebrated as German Unity Day. (3. October 1990)

Ninety-two people are killed aboard Indian Airlines Flight 605 at Bangalore, India. (14. February 1990)

Liechtenstein becomes a member of the United Nations. (18. September 1990)

Iraqi forces start massing on the Kuwait-Iraq border. (24. July 1990)

Final independence of Marshall Islands and Federated States of Micronesia after termination of trusteeship. (22. December 1990)

Xiamen Airlines Flight 8301 is hijacked and lands at Guangzhou, where it crashes into two other airliners on the ground, killing 128. (2. October 1990)

End of the Lebanese Civil War. Syrian forces launch an attack on the free areas of Lebanon removing General Michel Aoun from the presidential palace. (13. October 1990)

Namibia becomes independent after 75 years of South African rule. (21. March 1990)

Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti reveals to the Italian parliament the existence of Gladio, the Italian "stay-behind" clandestine paramilitary NATO army, which was implicated in false flag terrorist attacks implicating communists and anarchists as part of the strategy of tension from the late 1960s to early 1980s. (24. October 1990)

South Ossetia declares its independence from Georgia. (20. September 1990)

1990 Batticaloa massacre, massacre of 184 minority Tamil civilians by Sri Lankan Army in the eastern Batticaloa District of Sri Lanka. (9. September 1990)

Ferdinand Marcos's widow, Imelda Marcos, goes on trial for bribery, embezzlement, and racketeering. (20. March 1990)

200,000 protestors take to the streets of London to protest against the newly introduced Poll Tax. (31. March 1990)

Nelson Mandela is released from Victor Verster Prison outside Cape Town, South Africa after 27 years as a political prisoner. (11. February 1990)

Lithuania declares itself independent from the Soviet Union. (11. March 1990)

President George H. W. Bush posthumously awards Jesse Owens the Congressional Gold Medal. (28. March 1990)

The ethnic clashes of Târgu Mureş begin four days after the anniversary of the Revolutions of 1848 in the Habsburg areas. (19. March 1990)

Gruinard Island, Scotland, is officially declared free of the anthrax disease after 48 years of quarantine. (24. April 1990)
