Two bombs explode near the finish line at the Boston Marathon in Boston, Massachusetts, killing 3 people and injuring 264 others. (15. April 2013)

51 people are killed after a truck veers off a cliff in La Convencion Province in Peru. (12. October 2013)

Nigeria passes a law banning same-sex marriage. (30. May 2013)

11 people are killed in a train collision in Iași County, Romania. (8. September 2013)

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake strikes Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Iran, the strongest in the country in 40 years, killing at least 35 people. (16. April 2013)

A meteor explodes over Russia, injuring 1,500 people as a shock wave blows out windows and rocks buildings. This happens unexpectedly only hours before the expected closest ever approach of the larger and unrelated asteroid 2012 DA14. (15. February 2013)

The new eastern span of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge opened to traffic, being the widest bridge in the world. (2. September 2013)

At least 27 people are killed and 226 injured in an explosion in southern Beirut near a complex used by Lebanon's militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon. A previously unknown Syrian Sunni group claims responsibility in an online video. (15. August 2013)

A rare late-season tornado outbreak strikes the Midwest. Illinois and Indiana are most affected with tornado reports as far north as lower Michigan. In all around six dozen tornadoes touch down in approximately an 11-hour time period, including seven EF3 and two EF4 tornadoes. (17. November 2013)

The Smithsonian announces the discovery of the olinguito, the first new carnivoran species found in the Americas in 35 years. (15. August 2013)

The Government of Detroit, with up to $20 billion in debt, files for the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. (18. July 2013)

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake strikes southern Pakistan, killing more than 327 people. (24. September 2013)

Egypt declares a state of emergency as security forces kill hundreds of demonstrators supporting former president Mohamed Morsi. (14. August 2013)
