Black Panther Party members Bunchy Carter and John Huggins are killed during a meeting in Campbell Hall on the campus of UCLA. (17. January 1969)

Soviet spacecraft Soyuz 4 and Soyuz 5 perform the first-ever docking of manned spacecraft in orbit, the first-ever transfer of crew from one space vehicle to another, and the only time such a transfer was accomplished with a space walk. (16. January 1969)

Allende meteorite falls near Pueblito de Allende, Chihuahua, Mexico. (8. February 1969)

An accidental explosion aboard the USS Enterprise near Hawaii kills 27 people. (14. January 1969)

A gunman attempts to assassinate Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. (22. January 1969)

The Troubles: The Royal Ulster Constabulary raid the Bogside area of Derry, damaging property and beating residents. In response, residents erect barricades and establish Free Derry. (5. January 1969)

In Cairo, Yasser Arafat is appointed Palestine Liberation Organization leader at the Palestinian National Congress. (3. February 1969)

Student Jan Palach dies after setting himself on fire 3 days earlier in Prague's Wenceslas Square to protest about the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union in 1968. His funeral turned into another major protest. (19. January 1969)
