American Civil War: The Battle of Mobile Bay begins – at Mobile Bay near Mobile, Alabama, Admiral David Farragut leads a Union flotilla through Confederate defenses and seals one of the last major Southern ports. (5. August 1864)

Ninety-nine people are killed in Canada's worst railway disaster near St-Hilaire, Quebec. (29. June 1864)

American Civil War: The Battle of Marks' Mills. (25. April 1864)

Theta Xi fraternity is founded at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the only fraternity to be founded during the American Civil War. (29. April 1864)

American Civil War: Colonel Emory Upton leads a 10-regiment "Attack-in-depth" assault against the Confederate works at The Battle of Spotsylvania, which, though ultimately unsuccessful, would provide the idea for the massive assault against the Bloody Angle on May 12. Upton is slightly wounded but is immediately promoted to Brigadier general. (10. May 1864)

American Civil War: Confederate spy Belle Boyd is arrested by Union troops and detained at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C. (29. July 1864)

American Civil War: Battle of Gainesville – Confederate forces defeat Union troops near Gainesville, Florida. (17. August 1864)
