American Revolutionary War: British forces begin besieging the French outpost at Pondichéry. (21. August 1778)

American Revolutionary War: In Paris the Treaty of Alliance and the Treaty of Amity and Commerce are signed by the United States and France signaling official recognition of the new republic. (6. February 1778)

American Revolutionary War: British troops abandon Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (18. June 1778)
