In Austin, Texas the newly formed Texas state government is officially installed. The Republic of Texas government officially transfers power to the State of Texas government following the annexation of Texas by the United States. (19. February 1846)

The Cambridge Chronicle, America's oldest surviving weekly newspaper, is published for the first time in Cambridge, Massachusetts (7. May 1846)

Two French shepherd children, Mélanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud, experience a Marian apparition on a mountaintop near La Salette, France, now known as Our Lady of La Salette. (19. September 1846)

The first Mormon pioneers make their exodus from Nauvoo, Illinois, westward towards Salt Lake Valley. (4. February 1846)

Bear Flag Revolt begins – Anglo settlers in Sonoma, California, start a rebellion against Mexico and proclaim the California Republic. (14. June 1846)

Polish insurgents lead an uprising in Kraków to incite a fight for national independence. (20. February 1846)

The Papal conclave of 1846 concludes. Pope Pius IX is elected Pope beginning the longest reign in the history of the papacy. (16. June 1846)

The Battle of Aliwal, India, is won by British troops commanded by Sir Harry Smith. (28. January 1846)

The first officially recorded, organized baseball game is played under Alexander Cartwright's rules on Hoboken, New Jersey's Elysian Fields with the New York Base Ball Club defeating the Knickerbockers 23-1. Cartwright umpired. (19. June 1846)

Jang Bahadur and his brothers massacre about 40 members of the Nepalese palace court. (14. September 1846)

Elias Howe is granted a patent for the sewing machine. (10. September 1846)
