The Great Brinks Robbery – 11 thieves steal more than $2 million from an armored car company's offices in Boston, Massachusetts. (17. January 1950)

President Harry Truman orders the U.S. Army to seize control of the nation's railroads to avert a strike. (25. August 1950)

The United Kingdom recognizes the People's Republic of China. The Republic of China severs diplomatic relations with the UK in response. (6. January 1950)

Chaplain–Medic massacre: American POWs were massacred by North Korean Army. (16. July 1950)

The St. Roch, the first ship to circumnavigate North America, arrives in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. (29. May 1950)

Korean War: British troops arrive in Korea to bolster the US presence there. (29. August 1950)

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley announce the creation of element 98, which they name "californium". (17. March 1950)

Korean War: Task Force Smith – American and North Korean forces first clash, in the Battle of Osan. (5. July 1950)

Robert Schuman presents his proposal on the creation of an organized Europe, which according to him was indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations. This proposal, known as the "Schuman declaration", is considered by some people to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union. (9. May 1950)

Cold War: The Soviet Union issues a statement denying that Klaus Fuchs served as a Soviet spy. (7. March 1950)

The United States decides to send troops to fight in the Korean War. (27. June 1950)

Hill 303 massacre: American POWs are shot to death by the North Korean Army. (17. August 1950)

The Knesset passes a resolution that states Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. (23. January 1950)

Julien Lahaut, the chairman of the Communist Party of Belgium is assassinated by far-right elements. (18. August 1950)
