India and Bangladesh begin a five-day border conflict, but are unable to resolve the disputes about their border. (16. April 2001)

Former President of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Slobodan Milošević surrenders to police special forces, to be tried on war crimes charges. (1. April 2001)

NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft touches down in the "saddle" region of 433 Eros, becoming the first spacecraft to land on an asteroid. (12. February 2001)

The detained crew of a United States EP-3E aircraft that landed in Hainan, China after a collision with a J-8 fighter, is released. (11. April 2001)

Bandaranaike Airport attack is carried out by 14 Tamil Tiger commandos, all died in this attack. They destroyed 11 Aircraft (mostly military) and damaged 15, there are no civilian casualties. This incident slowed down Sri Lankan economy. (24. July 2001)

Mars Odyssey is launched. (7. April 2001)

Charles Ingram cheats his way into winning one million pounds on a British version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. (10. September 2001)

Nepalese royal massacre: Crown Prince Dipendra of Nepal shoots and kills several members of his family including his father and mother, King Birendra of Nepal and Queen Aiswarya. (1. June 2001)

An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter Scale hits El Salvador, killing at least 400. (13. February 2001)

Erik Weihenmayer, 32 years old, of Boulder, Colorado, becomes the first blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest. (25. May 2001)

In Belfast, Protestant loyalists begin a picket of Holy Cross, a Catholic primary school for girls. For the next 11 weeks, riot police escort the schoolchildren and their parents through hundreds of protesters, some of whom hurl missiles and abuse. The protest sparks fierce rioting and grabs world headlines. (3. September 2001)

Zug massacre: In Zug, Switzerland, Friedrich Leibacher shoots 18 citizens, killing 14 and then himself. (27. September 2001)

Six passengers and four railway staff are killed and a further 82 people suffer serious injuries in the Selby rail crash. (28. February 2001)

An EP-3E United States Navy surveillance aircraft collides with a Chinese People's Liberation Army Shenyang J-8 fighter jet. The Navy crew makes an emergency landing in Hainan, People's Republic of China and is detained. (1. April 2001)

During a trip to Syria, Pope John Paul II becomes the first pope to enter a mosque. (6. May 2001)

Ansett Australia, Australia's first commercial interstate airline, collapses due to increased strain on the international airline industry, leaving 10,000 people unemployed. (12. September 2001)

Wikipedia, a free Wiki content encyclopedia, goes online. (15. January 2001)

Andrea Yates, in an attempt to save her young children from Satan, drowns all five of them in a bathtub in Houston, Texas. (20. June 2001)

The Versailles wedding hall disaster in Jerusalem, Israel kills 23 and injures over 200. (24. May 2001)
