An earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale strikes central parts of Chile leaving over 500 victims, and thousands injured. The quake triggered a tsunami which struck Hawaii shortly after. (27. February 2010)

An overloaded passenger ferry capsizes on the Kasai River in Bandundu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, resulting in at least 80 deaths. (29. July 2010)

Economist and businessman Sebastián Piñera is sworn in as President of Chile, while three earthquakes, the strongest measuring magnitude 6.9 and all centered next to Pichilemu, capital of Cardenal Caro Province, hit central Chile during the ceremony. (11. March 2010)

Operation Iraqi Freedom ends, with the last of the United States brigade combat teams crossing the border to Kuwait. (19. August 2010)

John Isner of the United States defeats Nicolas Mahut of France at Wimbledon, in the longest match in professional tennis history. (24. June 2010)

An Air India Express Boeing 737 goes over a cliff and crashes upon landing at Mangalore, India, killing 158 of the 166 people on board. It is the worst crash involving a Boeing 737. (22. May 2010)

The 2009 Honduran constitutional crisis ends when Porfirio Lobo Sosa becomes the new President of Honduras. (27. January 2010)

Rioting begins between Muslim and Christian groups in Jos, Nigeria, resulting in at least 200 deaths. (17. January 2010)

Ten members of International Assistance Mission Nuristan Eye Camp team are killed by persons unknown in Kuran wa Munjan District of Badakhshan Province in Afghanistan. (5. August 2010)

The MV Sun Sea docks in CFB Esquimalt, British Columbia, Canada, carrying 492 Sri Lankan Tamils. (13. August 2010)

In West Bengal, India, a train derailment and subsequent collision kills 141 passengers. (28. May 2010)

The first-ever Youth Olympic Games are held in Singapore. (14. August 2010)

Twenty-nine coal miners are killed in an explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia. (5. April 2010)

JAXA, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, launches the solar-sail spacecraft IKAROS aboard an H-IIA rocket. The vessel would make a Venus flyby late in the year. (21. May 2010)

Widespread rioting erupts in Karachi, Pakistan, after the assassination of a local politician, leaving at least 85 dead and at least 17 billion Pakistani rupees (US$200 million) in damage. (3. August 2010)

Unknown criminals pour more than 2.5 million liters of diesel oil and other hydrocarbons into the river Lambro, in Northern Italy, sparking an environmental disaster. (23. February 2010)

The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explodes in the Gulf of Mexico, killing eleven workers and beginning an oil spill that would last six months. (20. April 2010)
