Hurricane Hazel devastates the eastern seaboard, killing 95 and causing massive floods as far north as Toronto. As a Category 4 upon landfall, it is the strongest storm on record to strike as far north as North Carolina. (15. October 1954)

Bill Haley & His Comets release "Rock Around the Clock", the first rock and roll record to reach number one on the Billboard charts. (10. May 1954)

Cold War: The United States Senate votes 65 to 22 to censure Joseph McCarthy for "conduct that tends to bring the Senate into dishonor and disrepute". (2. December 1954)

Roger Bannister becomes the first person to run the mile in under four minutes. (6. May 1954)

In Sylacauga, Alabama, United States, the Hodges Meteorite crashes through a roof and hits a woman taking an afternoon nap in the only documented case of a human being hit by a rock from space. (30. November 1954)

Hurricane Edna hits New England as a Category 3 hurricane, causing significant damage and 29 deaths. (11. September 1954)

The Andhra Pradesh High Court was established. (5. July 1954)

First Indochina War: Viet Minh forces under Vo Nguyen Giap unleashed a massive artillery barrage on the French to begin the Battle of Điện Biên Phủ, the climactic battle in the First Indochina War. (13. March 1954)

The Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty, between the United States and Taiwan, is signed in Washington, D.C.. (2. December 1954)

Alger Hiss is released from prison after serving 44 months for perjury. (27. November 1954)

The Humane Society of the United States is founded. (22. November 1954)

First flight of the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. (23. August 1954)

Germany: Otto John, head of West Germany's secret service, defects to East Germany. (20. July 1954)

The Geneva Conference, an effort to restore peace in Indochina and Korea, begins. (26. April 1954)

First Indochina War: The Geneva Conference partitions Vietnam into North Vietnam and South Vietnam. (21. July 1954)

Gamal Abdal Nasser seizes power in Egypt. (18. April 1954)
