Vietnam War: United States Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird announces that the United States will start to "Vietnamize" the war effort. (3. April 1969)

Software Industry IBM announced that effective January 1970 it would price its software and services separately from hardware thus creating the modern software industry. (23. June 1969)

The biggest explosion in the history of rocketry occurs when the Soviet N-1 rocket explodes and subsequently destroys its launchpad. (3. July 1969)

The McGill français movement protest occurs, the second largest protest in Montreal's history with 10,000 trade unionists, leftist activists, college students, and some McGill students at McGill's Roddick Gates. The majority of the protesters are arrested. (28. March 1969)

Vietnam War: U.S. President Richard Nixon declares the Nixon Doctrine, stating that the United States now expects its Asian allies to take care of their own military defense. This is the start of the "Vietnamization" of the war. (25. July 1969)

Carlos Lamarca leads the first urban guerrilla action against the military dictatorship of Brazil in São Paulo, by robbing two banks. (9. May 1969)

Apollo program: Apollo 11 successfully makes the first manned landing on the Moon in the Sea of Tranquility. Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first humans to walk on the Moon almost 7 hours later. (US Time) (20. July 1969)

In Cairo, Yasser Arafat is appointed Palestine Liberation Organization leader at the Palestinian National Congress. (3. February 1969)

A cease fire is announced between Honduras and El Salvador, 6 days after the beginning of the "Football War". (20. July 1969)

Warren E. Burger is sworn in as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court by retiring Chief Justice Earl Warren. (23. June 1969)

Venera program: Soviet Venera 6 begins its descent into the atmosphere of Venus, sending back atmospheric data before being crushed by pressure. (17. May 1969)
