The EC-121 shootdown incident: North Korea shoots down a United States Navy aircraft over the Sea of Japan, killing all 31 on board. (15. April 1969)

The biggest explosion in the history of rocketry occurs when the Soviet N-1 rocket explodes and subsequently destroys its launchpad. (3. July 1969)

In Memphis, Tennessee, James Earl Ray pleads guilty to assassinating Martin Luther King Jr. He later unsuccessfully attempts to retract his plea. (10. March 1969)

The 385 metres (1,263 ft) tall TV-mast at Emley Moor, United Kingdom, collapses due to ice build-up. (19. March 1969)

Apollo program: Apollo 11, the first mission to land astronauts on the Moon, is launched from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Kennedy, Florida. (16. July 1969)

The International communist conference begins in Moscow. (5. June 1969)

Apollo program: Apollo 10 is launched. (18. May 1969)

Allegheny Airlines Flight 853 DC-9 collides in flight with a Piper PA-28 and crashes near Fairland, Indiana. (9. September 1969)

Venera program: Soviet Venera 6 begins its descent into the atmosphere of Venus, sending back atmospheric data before being crushed by pressure. (17. May 1969)

The United States began secretly bombing the Sihanouk Trail in Cambodia, used by communist forces to infiltrate South Vietnam. (18. March 1969)

Apollo program: Apollo 11 splashes down safely in the Pacific Ocean. (24. July 1969)

The Chicago Eight trial opens in Chicago. (23. September 1969)

The Battle of Hamburger Hill in Vietnam ends. (20. May 1969)

Category 5 Hurricane Camille hits the U.S. Gulf Coast, killing 256 and causing $1.42 billion in damage. (17. August 1969)

The Cuyahoga River catches fire, triggering a crack-down on pollution in the river. (22. June 1969)

Apollo 10 's lunar module flies within 8.4 nautical miles (16 km) of the moon's surface. (22. May 1969)

Vietnam War: At the apartment of French intermediary Jean Sainteny in Paris, American representative Henry Kissinger and North Vietnamese representative Xuan Thuy begin secret peace negotiations. The negotiations will eventually fail. (4. August 1969)

The United States $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 bills are officially withdrawn from circulation. (14. July 1969)
